Themba Zwane speaks on Rulani Mokwena’s Sundowns exit

Mamelodi Sundowns skipper Themba Zwane says the players had to quickly accept the decision taken by the club to part ways with coach Rulani Mokwena.

The Brazilians have since announced Manqoba Mngqithi will lead the technical team made up of Steve Komphela and Romain Folz.

Zwane spoke for the first time about the sudden departure of the reigning Coach of the Season, who has since joined Wydad Casablanca.

"Obviously as players after seeing the news, we had to encourage one another, try to support one another, knowing for sure that decisions are made in football and we try to respect the decision of the team," Zwane said.

"Try to encourage the guys that the coach still remains the same, we still want to win all the trophies that we're competing for and I feel like the mood is fine and the brotherhood."

‘Mshishi’ doesn’t anticipate too many changes given the latest development, and the midfielder is also confident in what Folz brings to the table.

"For us, we feel like there's continuity as much as we feel like we're adding something that will help us in all the games that we're gonna play and try to improve the team. For me, it's good for the team, the competition needs to be high and we have lot of qualities and we have enough depth because we know that we're going to play a lot of games. So, it's good for us. He's a good coach, intelligent and for now, he's still quiet but we know going forward he will loosen up," he added.

Sundowns will begin their 2024/25 season against Polokwane City in the MTN8 quarterfinals next weekend, and Zwane doesn’t want them missing out on this competition again.

"It was tough for us last season but we have learnt a lot from that game of the final. This season we are coming with a different way where we want to start in the high, knowing for sure that it is not going to be easy but I feel like we did a lot in pre-season camp and we try to improve the team and try to get ready for the game."
