Thinasonke Mbuli says UWC needed the win more than a good performance

University of the Western Cape (UWC) coach Thinasonke Mbuli says a victory was more crucial than a good performance in their CAF Women’s Champions League clash with Aigles de la Medina of Senegal on Tuesday.

Both sides came into the encounter at the back of defeats and needed victory to stand any chance of progressing to the semi-finals.

Substitute Molatelo Kobo entered the history books by grabbing the first goal for UWC in the competition, with Ntombifikile Ndlovu adding the second to give the Capetonians a historic victory.

Mbuli says she knew it was not going to be easy.

"I think we needed the win more than performance today. We knew it was gonna be tough and we knew that there's a possibility that they might play like how we analysed them against AS Far and they did exactly that. So, we had to quickly adjust to how they were playing," Mbuli said.

Despite winning by two clear goals and being relieved by the three points, Mbuli is not impressed by the many missed chances, especially in the first half.

"Not happy with how we missed chances in the first half. I mean we could have scored two in the first half, two or three goals and then now we were put under pressure in the second half because now 2-0 is not a good result because if they kept on, then we are under pressure,” she added.

“But I think I'll take three points and the effort from the players because last 10, 15 minutes we were under a lot of pressure and they could manage to absorb the pressure and finish the game with a clean sheet."

After two hectic games, there is a concern that there may be some players who could be carrying niggling injuries which could affect UWC’s plans, but Mbuli is awaiting a medical report. S

he emphasized that she needs all hands on deck for the final match against a strong AS FAR.

"I think the medical team has two days to assess them, I haven't received a report that says maybe they can't play the next match. So, we are busy with recovery now, once we are done then we'll get the report but I hope that everyone will again be available for the next matches.

“We saw today the subs were the ones who made a change so we are gonna need everyone available for the next match."
