Matsatsantsa have formalised their relationship with the tertiary institute following CAF’s recommendation for all clubs involved in continental competitions to be affiliated with a women’s team. Kutumela reflects on the latest developments.
"As a varsity, we try by all means to encourage players to balance between academics and sport because we understand that football is a short-term career. So, for us [this partnership] is a blessing because it's going to strengthen us, help in terms of financial capability", said Kutumela.
The announcement, made last month to confirm SuperSport would provide additional resources and rename the Super League outfit TUT Matsatsantsa Ladies, has made recruitment simpler, says Kutumela.
"I'm starting to receive a lot of messages. Everybody wants to be part of the varsity [club] now because of this partnership. So, I think we are really on a positive slate, and we are looking forward to registering those who basically came forward right now, the quality players."
A lot of the teams in the women’s league have not made their struggles in the semi-professional entity a secret.
Kutumela feels their new partnership goes a long way to address the parity.
"Now this is the opportunity, this is the change. Since we have partnered with SuperSport, now more strength is coming in, and there's more support. And already they have seen the possibilities, they have seen what it is they can actually benefit from.”
