UEFA Nations League Wrap: Cristiano Ronaldo scores late winner for Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo came up clutch for Portugal in the Nations League on Sunday, while Spain thumped Switzerland despite a first-half red card.

Portugal 2-1 Scotland

Portugal secured a second consecutive win in Group 1 as they handed Scotland a 2-1 defeat at Estadio do Sport Lisboa on Sunday.

Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay gave the Scots hope of pulling off an upset as he scored in the seventh minute - a lead they defended until half-time.

However, his former team-mate at the Red Devils, Bruno Fernandes, equalised for the hosts early in the second half.

Old Trafford legend Cristiano Ronaldo then showed his class again in the 88th minute as he netted the decisive goal to clinch victory and keep Portugal at the top of the group.

Switzerland 1-4 Spain

Euro 2024 champions Spain proved too strong for Switzerland in their Group 4 encounter at Stade de Geneve, as they won 4-1 despite going down to 10 men.

Two-nil up, thanks to Joselu's fourth-minute opener and Fabian Ruiz's first goal shortly thereafter, Spain were reduced to 10 players in the 20th minute when Robin Le Normand was sent off.

Despite the setback, La Roya continued to dominate the game. They conceded just before the break as Zeki Amdouni found the back of the net, but that turned out to be nothing more than a consolation for the hosts.

Ruiz completed his brace in the 77th minute and Ferran Torres put the result beyond doubt three minutes later to secure all three points for the visitors.

Denmark 2-0 Serbia

In Group 4, Denmark continued their perfect start to the Nations League as they eased past Serbia 2-0 at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen.

Albert Gronbaek made it 1-0 to the hosts shortly before the interval, and Yussuf Poulsen's strike around the hour mark was enough to place the Danes firmly at the top of Group 4.

Croatia 1-0 Poland

Real Madrid veteran Luka Modric led his country to a narrow win over Poland thanks to his lone strike in the 52nd minute of their Nations League clash at the Opus Arena.

Croatia are now placed second in Group 1, behind leaders Portugal, and level on points with third-placed Poland.
