Unathi Mabena expresses gratitude following JVW departure

Former JVW assistant coach Unathi Mabena has expressed her gratitude for the opportunity of serving at the club as she ended an eight-year stay in Bedfordview.

Mabena has parted ways with JVW ahead of the 2025 Hollywoodbets Super League season, with former teammate Janine van Wyk having now taken the head coaching reins.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Mabena added that she's currently taking an off-season break.

"For eight years it was great, I learnt a lot while I was there and I've had all my coaching experience from there, having arrived there as a player and transitioned into coaching at the club," said Mabena.

"I'll always be grateful and thankful for the opportunity I was given by Janine and Lauren [Duncan]. For now, I'm enjoying the break and time off because it does get crazy during the season when trying to juggle both work and coaching."

Mabena says she will continue to follow what is happening in the Super League, and still looks forward to a competitive 2025 season.

"Like with any season, I believe all teams will want to improve from their previous season, and it will be interesting to see how the newly-promoted teams perform and handle the challenges of the league," she added.

"It will also be interesting to see if there will be changes to the top-five placing at the end of the season, as those teams have consistently finished in the top five over the past couple of seasons.

"Sundowns, TS Galaxy, UWC, UJ and JVW always challenge each other, and it will be very interesting to see who comes out top in 2025."
