UWC in a battle to stay in contention for the COSAFA qualifier semifinals

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) coach, Thinasonke Mbuli admits that only a win will suffice against FC Ongos of Namibia in the CAF Women’s Champions League COSAFA qualifier in Malawi this afternoon.

The South Africans lost their opening fixture on Thursday, going down 1-0 to Green Buffaloes of Zambia. Mbuli says they need to score goals against Ongos to stay in contention for the semifinals.

Green Buffaloes face Herentals Queens in the other group clash, and Mbuli hopes there will be a winner, as both teams won their first matches.

"I just hope they will be an open game, no one must sit deep and say I'm okay with a draw because both teams are still not safe. Three points in a tournament, you are not safe but yeah to answer your question, if Green Buffaloes win, I think it will be better for us but then if they don't again, at least they play in the morning then it means we must score more goals for us later after their game,” Mbuli said.

“We don't have a choice, we must win, we must score goals and we must try and make sure that we don't concede."

The Banyana Banyana assistant coach says they will have a tough match against the Namibians and will have to fight for positive results.

"It will be tough like I said they also lost a game, I got an opportunity today to watch their game, it won't be easy but we don't have a choice. If we want to go into the next round, we must win, we don't have a choice. I'm sure they're also saying the same thing about us but yeah, we don't have a choice, we need results."
