UWC to release four more senior players as part of rebuilding phase

University of the Western Cape coach Thinasonke Mbuli has revealed that the team will release four more senior players as part of their rebuilding phase.

SABC Sport can confirm that midfielder Babalwa ‘Sticks’ Mngxunya and strikers Khanya Xesi and Molatelo Kobo will form part of the four.

Cape based players Mngxunya and Xesi are likely to join league newcomers the University of Cape Town ladies.

Mbuli acknowledged the players for their contribution to help build the team from the Sasol League promotion in 2018 into the national SAFA League now renamed Hollywoodbets Super League.

“We have four other players that we are going to release, which makes it a total of seven senior players that will no longer be with us. Some of these players started with the team from the Sasol League up to where we are now, and we remain grateful for their contribution,” Mbuli said.

“Now we are really forced to rebuild the team. Yes we are currently looking, and we do have players that we are accessing, but most importantly we want young players for our rebuilding phase.”

UWC have already parted ways with key three players to international teams, in just a space of five months, including the team’s captain and vice-captain Amogelang Motau and Bongeka Gamede respectively.

Mbuli says it is their main mission to groom players and release them to more advanced clubs, and have them experience football at a higher level.

“That is part of our vision and mission to produce players who will be able to perform at an international stage and play professional football. We have done it before but it is the first time releasing three in a space of five months, so we are very proud,’’ added Mbuli.

The 42-year-old mentor is one of the most qualified female coaches in the country and might just attract a few significant offers in the new year.

She said she can’t deny the possibility of taking a great offer, however she currently remains faithful to the UWC project.

“I’m currently happy at UWC and we will see. I cannot say, if something comes up I won’t leave but I am saying currently there’s no better offers that will make me leave UWC. So, I am just happy to start this new project and see where it takes us. I am happy here,’’ she expressed.
