Virgil van Dijk: 'Progress' being made in Liverpool contract talks

Speaking following Liverpool's disappointing 3-2 defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage, Van Dijk hinted that talks may finally be edging towards a resolution.

Van Dijk, whose current contract runs out in a few months, has been locked in discussions with Liverpool for some time, with no agreement yet reached. The 32-year-old is represented by ROOF, and negotiations have been ongoing throughout the season.

Just over three weeks ago, before Liverpool's Carabao Cup final defeat to Newcastle United, Van Dijk openly admitted he was unsure about his future at Anfield. His latest comments, however, mark a shift in tone and may reassure fans concerned about his possible departure.

The uncertainty around Van Dijk's future comes amid similar situations involving key teammates Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah, who are also in the final months of their contracts. The trio's expiring deals have raised questions about Liverpool's long-term planning as the club looks to transition into a new era.

"There is progress, yeah," Van Dijk revealed. "I don't know [if I'll stay], we'll see. Listen (laughs), these are internal discussions and we'll see.

"I love the club, I love the fans and they were there for us again and we wanted to reward them but I want them to be there Sunday again and make the stadium an amazing venue like always for us. We have to make it work and we will.

"We will be training quite a lot and we are in a very good position but games like this, especially in the first half, show the job is not done and I've been saying it every week.

"That's definitely the mentality in our group that the job [of winning the league] is not done and now we just have to recover from this, physically and mentally, and put our minds on West Ham at home."
