Why Lehlohonolo Seema will not be on Sekhukhune United bench

Sekhukhune United have excused coach Lehlohonolo Seema from travelling with the team to Angola for their CAF Confederation Cup assignment this weekend, SABC Sport can confirm.

His assistant Kaitano Tembo will take charge of Babina Noko when they face CD Luanda in the first leg of their group stage play-offs with Seema invited for a CAF A License refresher course in Lesotho.

Seema is one of several coaches who completed their badges under the Lesotho FA (LeFA) in 2016 and have been asked to return for a revision.

The list includes Likwena head coach Leslie Notsi, former Golden Arrows and Chippa United mentor Mark Harrison as well as Morena Ramoreboli of Botswana champions Jwaneng Galaxy.

Galaxy also host Orlando Pirates in the CAF Champions League at their National Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

According to a statement from LeFA the “coaches that fail to attend the course will render their license redundant or obsolete as this is prescribed by CAF."

Indeed, the African football continental body has made it mandatory that member clubs in any of the inter-club tournaments be led by coaches with the relevant qualifications that fit the criteria.

No coach without a CAF A License can sit on the bench – and part of the reason Sekhukhune had appointed Seema in the first place over other possible candidates was the fact that the former defender ticked all the boxes.

The refresher course begins today in Maseru and runs until Sunday, meaning Seema will be back in the dugout when Babina Noko start their Betway Premiership campaign against Magesi on Wednesday.
