Xabi Alonso 'proud' of Bayer Leverkusen's win against Bayern Munich

Bayer Leverkusen secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich in the DFB Pokal round of 16, delivering a statement performance at the Allianz Arena.

Nathan Tella scored the decisive goal in the 69th minute, rising to meet a cross with a perfectly timed header.

Despite having less possession, Leverkusen were the more threatening side, particularly in the first half, where they carved out better opportunities against a typically dominant Bayern.

The match took a dramatic turn when Bayern's goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, was shown a red card, leaving the hosts to battle with ten men for much of the second half.

The win is a significant boost for Leverkusen, whose recent improvements in form and performances have solidified their reputation as one of Germany's most exciting sides.

Under the guidance of manager Xabi Alonso, who has remained unbeaten against Bayern since taking over in 2022, the team continues to grow in confidence.

"I'm very proud of the team. Sometimes it doesn't matter how you win, the main thing is that you win," said Alonso.

We've seen all of Bayern's games: they usually destroy their opponents. It's not easy to survive here. It was hard for the players, they gave everything.

"A very important night for us. To win here today, against FC Bayern, who have been very strong this season, is something special.

"Of course we had to suffer, but we achieved our goal, and that's great! In the end, we are super happy."

For Bayern Munich, the loss highlights a troubling trend in their DFB Pokal campaign, as they have failed to reach the final since their 2020 triumph, which ironically came against Leverkusen.

Leverkusen's triumph not only advances them to the quarter-finals but also cements their status as genuine contenders in domestic and European competitions this season.
