Xabi Alonso rumours dismissed as Robert Andrich praises Leverkusen boss

Robert Andrich has downplayed speculation linking Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso with a summer move to Real Madrid, insisting the Spaniard remains fully committed to the Bundesliga club.

Reports from Eurosport have suggested that Alonso, who has guided Leverkusen to an impressive start this season, could return to Madrid next summer to take charge of his former team.

However, Andrich emphasised that there is no indication Alonso is already planning his departure.

"We don't have the feeling that Xabi is thinking about leaving Leverkusen," Andrich told Sky Germany. "There are always rumours about players, and when it's a coach, it's even more talked about.

"He gives us the feeling that he is always at the top of his game with our team and still wants to achieve a lot with the club."

Alonso, 42, has transformed Leverkusen into serious title contenders since his arrival, earning plaudits for his tactical approach and man-management. While the speculation surrounding his future continues, Leverkusen fans will take comfort in Andrich's reassurances.

Meanwhile, another Leverkusen star attracting transfer interest is Florian Wirtz. The 21-year-old attacking midfielder has been in fine form and has recently recovered from an infection that briefly sidelined him during Germany's preparations for their UEFA Nations League clash with Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Andrich acknowledged Wirtz's potential for a big move but suggested the timeline for such a transfer remains uncertain.

"Everyone knows how good Flo is, how consistent he is for his age, and how quickly he got back to such a high level after his injury. I'm sure he's ready for the next step.

"Whether he goes next summer or the summer after that... that's written in the stars," Andrich said.

Wirtz joined Germany's training on Thursday after a two-day absence, providing coach Julian Nagelsmann with a boost ahead of Saturday's match in Freiburg. With 22 players fit to train, Germany opted not to replace Angelo Stiller, who withdrew due to a muscular problem.

As rumours swirl, Leverkusen's immediate focus remains on maintaining their strong form under Alonso and keeping key players like Wirtz firing on all cylinders.
