Zambia's Augustine Mulenga dreaming of AFCON swansong

AmaZulu striker Augustine Mulenga remains hopeful he can get game-time at his club in order to impress the Zambia national team coaches enough to be considered for their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations squad.

Mulenga, who has only played one game for Usuthu this season, has not featured for the Chipolopolo in three years and, with coach Avram Grant having opted for youthful talent, his chances of making it to Morocco are already slim.

Nonetheless, the 34-year-old has his heart set on proving his worth.

"Yes, being a soccer player, it's every player's dream to play for their national team, and when the nation qualified for the AFCON, I'm sure each and everyone always tries to work extra hard so that he can have that opportunity to represent the country," said Mulenga.

"I'm sure, even to me, I'm going to work so hard and see when the time comes if I'm going to be selected or not, but I have confidence in myself that I will be there."

Now that Mulenga has recovered from an injury, he’s hoping to impress AmaZulu co-coaches Vusumuzi Vilakazi and Arthur Zwane to get the much-needed game time.

"Yes, it starts from the club, and in the first round I haven't played much games because of the injury, but now I've recovered and I'm sure I'll start playing soon," he noted.

"When the coaches give me that opportunity, and I'm back on the field, I'm going to try by all means to give my best and find myself back in the national team."
