Dinesha Devnarain shifts focus to T20 World Cup preparations

South Africa under-19 Women's coach Dinesha Devnarain says they will make use of the few weeks left to put together a solid squad ahead of the 2025 ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup.

The second edition of the world showpiece will take place in Malaysia from 18 January to 2 February next year.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Devnarain says they will also look at getting much game time to help assess the progress of the team.

"I think before we get into the World Cup, we'll look into obviously getting as much game time. There's potential tours lined up, nothing official yet but the main thing is that girls need to do well academically so it's about managing school time with skill time, social life as well,” Devnarain said.

“So, it's very crucial two months for us. As much as we can meet up as a unit, we'll definitely do that and look to incorporate the brand of cricket that we've been playing and get as much game time before we head into a massive event."

South Africa recently competed in a successful Youth T20I whitewash series against Ireland.

Devnarain says she is happy to be leading dominant players and that the team is shaping up well as they continue with their World Cup preparations.

"Look, I think our ladies have been quite dominant bowling that fifth T20 but I'm glad that happened so it got to test our character but, on the field, and luckily it came for a win against us,” she added.

“I think we've been good, we've been a little bit concerned about the batting department but it's good to see that the girls pulled through and the team is shaped in all departments so we're really excited about that.

“Fielding is something we definitely think or we know is a controllable for us. So, we want to definitely master that skillset but yeah, we've got to be grounded as well.

“We go in with every ambition to go and win the World Cup. So, we just wanna look to play positive cricket, take the good performances in and still look to improve."
