She surpassed India’s Shreyanka Patil and Scottish cricketer Saskia Horley to be counted amongst the best in world cricket for last season.
Speaking to SABC Sport, Dercksen says her 2024 success is a reflection of the Proteas’ collective effort.
"Yeah, I've gotta to say I'm not really one for personal awards or recognition but this is definitely a great honour and I'm very humbled but cricket is ultimately a team sport and I think this is probably more a reflection of the hard work and support of my teammates and coaches rather than myself. I've gotta say, I'm extremely humbled and very motivated by this award," Dercksen said.
Dercksen participated in her second ICC T20 World Cup last year and helped the
Proteas to secure a silver medal in Dubai.
She says she’s happy to see her hard work yield positive results.
"I think something I'd like to pride myself on is probably work ethic but yeah, a huge shoutout to my coaches honestly. Most of the year we're probably training for provincials and touring and temperatures regularly get up to high 40's there and I mean they are still out there throwing balls at me, so I'm very fortunate to have them with me,” she added.
“I think nationally, our skills coaches also add a lot of value with some great technical and tactical work and some insights and I feel like that gave me some better options and clear plans so a big thanks to them as well.
Fortunately for me, cricket never really feels like work, I think it's the best thing in the world and I really love it, so I'm very grateful to my coaches for pushing me and helping me throughout the year."
