Laura Wolvaardt hints at Proteas Women debuts against India

Proteas Women captain Laura Wolvaardt has suggested that they could be handing at least one of the three youngsters in the squad their ODI debuts, when they take on India in their first match of the tri-series in Sri Lanka on Tuesday.

Coach Mandla Mshimbyi called up U19 stars Karabo Meso and Seshnie Naidu, as well as uncapped all-rounder Miané Smit, for the first time in the 50-over format for the trip.

Although the skipper couldn't say with certainty whether they'll start at the Premasada Stadium, she did say that's exactly why they're there as World Cup preparations intensify.

"We obviously have the three youngsters with us on this tour, so I would love to see them get a chance throughout this series and it would be awesome to see some of them getting a chance,” Wolvaardt said.

“I think that's what the series is about as well, it's testing out different combinations and seeing what we have sort of in the depths of our squad. Obviously, with the World Cup coming up, you wanna try things now and sort of settle on the final 11 as you get closer to the event. So, I'd love to see some of them having a go."

Wolvaardt says the three have worked very hard since joining the group, while injecting some youthful energy on the tour.

She also believes their presence eliminates complacency from the senior players.

"Yeah, they've all been super keen to learn, super keen to just do extra where they can. I think Smitty [Maine’ Smit], everyone has seen her bat for three hours, which I've been a bit annoyed about because she steals some of my batting time but yeah, she's just so keen to learn and spend as much time with all the coaches as much as she can,” the skipper added.

“Same for the other two, just the energy they bring, the vibe, I think it also just creates a little bit of healthy competition as you see these up and coming youngsters and it forces you to think if you are still putting in that extra hard work and making sure you're doing the extras as well to stay on top of your game.

“So, I've really enjoyed the energy and the eagerness that they've brought."
