The 25-year-old, who made his international debut against Australia in September last year, will join up with Northamptonshire after the Proteas' T20I series against the West Indies later this month.
Breetzke has enjoyed some brilliant domestic seasons in South Africa, recently finishing as top scorer with 467 runs in the 2024 CSA T20 Challenge and is keen to make an impact in England.
He said: "I am very excited to join the Steelbacks for the upcoming Vitality Blast and really grateful for the opportunity.
"I hope to contribute a lot on and off the field during my time at the club."
Northamptonshire head coach John Sadler added: "Matt is a very capable batter who will bring power, experience and some real determination to the side.
"We identified what we wanted to achieve with our signings this year and he perfectly fits the profile of the type of player that we wanted to bring in as our second overseas.
"He has been excellent over the last couple of seasons domestically and we've been really impressed so we can't wait to see what he can do this year."
The English county side have now confirmed both overseas signings for the domestic T20 tournament with Breetzke joined in the line-up by Zimbabwe international Sikandar Raza.
Northamptonshire will kick off their T20 Blast campaign on 30 May against Derbyshire.
