Proteas fully focused on levelling series against India

Proteas bowler Gerald Coetzee insists their focus right now is to perform better against India.

South Africa will host Sri Lanka and Pakistan to fight for the final of spot of the ICC test Championship.

Addressing the media following their disappointing display, the paceman says they are not thinking about test matches as yet.

"I think the test team has done really well but it hasn’t crossed my mind just yet. This is an important series for us. So, I think for now everyone is focused, I can only speak for myself but it seems like the focus is here,” Coetzee said.

“The test team is in a really good spot but that's only for later. Right now we've got India in front of us which is a heavy task.”

South Africa won the toss and elected to bowl first, a decision that ended up backfiring as India took advantage of the conditions by scoring big with Sanju Samson recording a century leading the visitors to a comfortable 202 runs.

Coetzee defends their decision to bowl first.

"About the toss, I think we wanted to bowl first, I don't think there was any problem there. I think the wicket was good for us to bowl and start. Very grateful to be back, it's nice to have a good game but it's bitter sweet to lose," he added.

Rob Walters’ side has been struggling in the white ball format, Coetzee is of opinion that they are still rebuilding.

"I think there is something there, we were just in the final for the T20 World Cup, now it's a new team. There's a World Cup coming up, not next year, the year after so we need new blood. There's plenty of talent and we've seen that, it's just that the boys need some experience, need to sharpen up their skills and we'll be good to go."
