The Proteas, batting first, struggled to increase the scoring rate, with Ruan de Swardt (55 not out) and Shaun von Berg (34 not out) forming a crucial 70-run partnership for the seventh wicket.
De Swardt marked his second Test with a maiden half-century, while von Berg, debuting at 37, showed composure.
