The Proteas will switch from red-ball cricket after the upcoming second Test against West Indies at Wanderers this week, with Walter officially set to get his tenure underway.
The first notable change is that of the T20I captain, with Temba Bavuma having stepped down after taking up the Test captaincy under Shukri Conrad.
Former SA under-19 skipper Aiden Markram, who recently led Sunrisers Eastern Cape to their inaugural SA20 title, will succeed the 32-year-old, who remains the 50-over captain.
Other notable inclusions to the T20 side include DP World Lions duo Bjorn Fortuin Sisanda Magala.
For the three-match ODI series, there are two squads for the opening two matches before changes will be made for the third, while pace bowlers Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada will be rested entirely.
Tony de Zorzi, Gerald Coetzee and Tristan Stubbs have all earned maiden call-ups to the ODI side, while Ryan Rickleton also gets a recall.
“I would like to congratulate Aiden on his appointment as captain of the Proteas T20I team. Leadership is extremely familiar to him having successfully led on so many levels," said Cricket SA director of cricket Enoch Nkwe.
"He is a player that inspires confidence and he has all the qualities to succeed in the role. We have no doubt he will help take South Africa to the next level.
“At the same time, we would like to thank Temba for filling the position so aptly over the past two years. He has done a commendable job during this period and now has a new role to fulfill within the national set-up.”
