Sri Lanka put up some resistance but Proteas complete Test victory at Kingsmead

Marco Jansen completed 11 wickets in a match for the first time in his career as the Proteas wrapped up a 233-run victory in the first Test against Sri Lanka at Kingsmead.

Chasing an mammoth target of 516, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 282 after lunch on the fourth day with Jansen finishing with figures of 4-73 in the second innings.

The tourists' batting effort was far better than in the first innings when they were blown away for just 42 in just over an hour.

Jansen took 7-13 in that first innings and with his wickets second time around meant he finished with match-figures of 11-86, which is the best-ever for a Proteas bowler in a Test Kingsmead.

Sri Lanka resumed the fourth day on 103-5 and Dinesh Chandimal together with his captain Dhananjaya de Silva put up better resistance with a partnership of 95 for the sixth wicket.

The batters looked largely untroubled until spinner Keshav Maharaj made the breakthrough when Dhananjaya chipped a delivery to mid-wicket to walk back to the dressing room for 59.

Chandimal and Kusal Mendis then took the visitors went to the lunch interval with the total on 220-6.

It was after the interval that things happened quickly as Chandimal was caught and bowled by fast bowler Gerald Coetzee for a well-played 83 to break the 75-run stand before Maharaj had Vishwa Fernando caught at first slip.

Jansen then returned into the attack and claimed his 10th wicket of the match when he had Mendis caught behind for 48 before sealing the victory by bowling number 11 Asitha Fernando.

The Proteas go 1-0 up in the two-match series with the second and final Test starting in Gqeberha on Thursday.
