The touring Proteas would fall 16 runs short of the 207-run total set by the hosts in sunny Kingston.
Batting first, the West Indies found themselves 54/2 after six overs, which brought Roston Chase to the crease. The lanky right-hander proceeded to bludgeon the Proteas' bowlers all around the park. He was supported at the other by Andre Fletcher and later Romario Shepard.
When Shapard was finally dismissed for a quickfire 26 off 13, the West Indies had passed the 200 mark and the damage had been done. Chase ended not out on a robust 67 (38).
In response, the Proteas were off to a flyer. Reeza Hendricks and Quinton de Kock teed off to get to 81 in just five overs before one kept low and rattled the de Kock's stumps. Chase then contributed with the ball to dismiss Hendricks shortly after. But even when Matthew Breetzke risked a second run and found himself short, the visitors were in control at 113/3 at the halfway point.
But spinner Gudakesh Motie had other ideas. The left-hander ripped through the Proteas' lower order to finish with figures of 3/22, leaving the South African tailenders with too much to do.
A silver lining for the Proteas was the debut of legspinner Nqabayomzi Peter, who picked up a tidy 2/32 in his allotment earlier.
"We let them get too much again," said captain Rassie van der Dussen. "The spinners bowled really well; Peter, on debut, [was] brilliant. Looking at the way Shepherd bowled today, he was disciplined. It was really disappointing. We have one more chance, and looking to bounce back tomorrow [Sunday]."
