Jordaan, PSL to meet over Super League

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) is set to be integral in the formation and success of the African Super League (ASL), should they endorse it.

The DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns and Soweto giants Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs are among the 24 teams earmarked to become founding members of the competition set to kick off in August 2023.

SAFA President Danny Jordaan has revealed that he will soon be meeting with the PSL Chairman Irvin Khoza to discuss the nitty gritty of the ASL and says the prize money of R184-million for the winning club would be a gamer changer for the local game.

"The continent is split into zones - West Africa has WAFU A and WAFU B, Central Africa around DR Congo and East and Southern Africa will be combined, and then North Africa," explained Jordaan.

"Each zone will have allocated teams, and South Africa has three - Mamelodi Sundowns, [Orlando] Pirates and [Kaizer] Chiefs - and that is why the discussion with the PSL is so important before we can give feedback, and we do have time.

"The prize money for winning the Super League has been announced, it's $11.5-million so in South African Rands it's multiplied by 16, how much is that? R184-million, so if you win the league, Nedbank Cup, Telkom, I don't know - will you get R15-million there?"

As a preparation fee for the tournament, the 24 participating clubs will each receive about R41-million - an amount equivalent to the first prize for winning the current CAF Champions League.

If endorsed by leading leagues such as the PSL, the ASL has the potential to revolutionise club football in Africa.
