Ex-Richmond United Ladies coach welcomes Sasol League speculation

Former Richmond United coach Edwin Lisene has confirmed to SABC Sport that he is open to taking on the head coach role at Marumo Gallants Ladies in the Sasol League.

Lisene parted ways with the Northern Cape outfit at the end of the 2024 Hollywoodbets Super League season, and has since been linked with the position at Gallants.

Speaking exclusively to the public broadcaster, the ex-Bloemfontein Celtic Ladies mentor says he would be happy to return to his roots to ensure the Free State province reclaims its status in the elite women's league.

"To be honest, I'm linked with Marumo Gallants, but it's not yet finalised. If it happens, it will be good for me and the province because I would like to see women's football going to where it was during my time at Bloemfontein Celtic," said Lisene.

"Back then women's football in South Africa was dominated by Bloemfontein Celtic Ladies."

Lisene, who won league titles in the Sasol League with Bloemfontein Celtic Ladies before the arrival of the SAFA Women’s National League in the 2019/20 season, says he is not too concerned about returning to the lower division.

"I don't have a problem with starting from scratch and going back to the Sasol League, which would be a bigger challenge than coaching a Hollywoodbets Super League team," he added.

"It won't be easy because you'll be fighting for honours and to take the team to the Hollywoobets Super League."
