Spar increase prize money for next year

Spar is reinforcing its commitment to athletics in Africa with an increase in prize money for the 2023 edition of the women™s 10km race.

Charlene Subbarayan, the group sponsor and events manager, confirmed to SABC Sport that from 2023 the overall winnings would be above R200 000.

œWe are having discussions with Athletics SA (ASA), and we haven™t decided on the percentage, and it could be 10%, 20%, or 30%, but it™s an increase.

Yes, the prize money will be above R200 000. We don™t know the precise figure for now because they are other elements that contribute to the budget of the Grand Prix prize money

2022 Grand Prix champion Tadu Nare of Ethiopia collected R190 000 for winning the series, but pocketed more than R300 000, including the R30 000 she won for coming first in five of the six events.

œWe don™t want to disclose anything right now, said Subbarayan at the Spar Women™s 10km challenge awards ceremony in Tshwane on Wednesday.

2017 champion Kesa Molotsane was the highest South African on the leaderboard in fourth place, as Ethiopia took first and second (Salem Gabre), with Nambia third through Helalia Johannes.

The organisers are hoping an R10 000 incentive will entice the first finish from South Africa in each of the six races.

œWe are trying to get ways and means towards rewarding the first South African on the leader board.

We are trying to incentivize the first South African in each race and on the leaderboard. We want the internationals to still participate in our races, but we want the South African ladies to strive and achieve better to compete on the international stages, Subbarayan said.

120 000 runners across the six races in Gqeberha, Durban, Mbombela, Tshwane, and Cape Town are targeted for 2023.
