The South African team embarked on their journey to Hyderabad on Wednesday, led by the chairperson of road running for Athletics South Africa (ASA), Enock Skosana.
The squad consists of a talented roster of athletes, including Dan Matshailwe, Nkosinathi Mhlakwana, Sikhumbuzo Seme, Mzazi, and Pule Sibeko. Mzazi, in particular, is in peak physical condition and is poised to contribute significantly to the ultra-marathon team’s pursuit of a podium finish.
"We are looking forward to representing the country. We have a strong team and we beilve we can win the gold in the team prize for both males and females. Team A is quite a strong team," Mzazi said.
Mzazi secured his spot on Team SA bound for India earlier this year by completing a challenging North West N12 50km Ultra-Marathon.
His Personal Best time for the 50km distance stands at just 2 hours and 57 minutes. Beyond his own training and racing, Mzazi dedicates his time to coaching a group of young aspiring athletes, keeping himself actively engaged in the sport.
"For now, I'm busy with my development but now I'll be graduating to ultras [ultramarathons] next year. I'll be running one of the big ultras, which I will announce very soon but I'm looking forward to the World Champs. I've prepared, at least the weather conditions will allow me because they said it's quite humid and hot in India," Mzazi added.
The South African half-marathon team clinched a well-deserved bronze medal in Riga, Latvia last month.
Now, the Ultra-Marathon team is determined to follow in their footsteps and replicate that success in India.
"Even do better, the guys I have are experienced. It's Comrades guys. We have guys who have done well in the 56 Two Oceans Ultramarathon. So, I believe we can do well in the ultramarathon. So, I believe we can come back with a gold medal in the men's team."
