Rufus Photo gears up for the 50km Ultra-Marathon World Championships in India

Rufus Photo, the renowned ultra-marathon runner from Limpopo, eagerly anticipates representing his nation at the upcoming International Association of Ultra-Marathon (IAU) 50km World Championships scheduled for November 5 in India.

Departing for Hyderabad on November 1, the team will be under the leadership of Enoch Skosana, the chairperson of road running for Athletics South Africa (ASA).

The squad comprises accomplished athletes, including Dan Matshailwe, Nkosinathi Mhlakwana, Skhumbuzo Seme, Gladwin Mzazi, and Pule Sibeko.

They’ve been entrusted with the responsibility of securing a team medal, aspiring to follow in the footsteps of the recent bronze-winning Half-Marathon team in Riga, Latvia two weeks ago.

“The preparations are progressing smoothly, and I’m eagerly anticipating boarding the plane to represent my nation and make them proud. The team’s pursuit of a medal is a significant source of motivation, and we’re setting our sights on securing either a silver or gold medal. We draw inspiration from the success of the World Half-Marathon team, and we’re committed to giving our all for our country. Our team is a potent mix of youthful energy and seasoned experience,” shared Photo, who achieved a commendable sixth place in this year’s Comrades Marathon, during an interview with SABC Sport.

Photo (43), who is currently in search of a new running club following the discontinuation of the Murray & Roberts sponsorship due to financial challenges in June, has been diligently preparing for the World Championships through his participation in local competitions held in Giyani and Phalaborwa.

“I’ve heard that it’s quite hot in India, and I’m anticipating a challenging race. My training base is in Moletjie village, just outside Polokwane: However, life has become challenging without a regular monthly retainer. I’, hopeful about joining a new running club as I’m currently facing some financial difficulties. Supporting our families can be tough without the backing of a club,” Photo shared.

Photo is concentrating on building up mileage and intends to approach the ultra-marathon race much like a standard 42km marathon.

He acknowledged the slight difference between the Comrades Marathon and the 50km Ultra-Marathon, emphasizing that the latter places a greater emphasis on endurance.

However, he expressed confidence in his current state of health and his prospects for success.
