This transition comes after his previous running affiliation, Murray & Roberts Running Club, ceased its operations in June last year, attributing the closure to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The unfortunate closure left runners, including Photo, without a club to call home and without the monthly stipend they had previously received.
Photo crossed the finish line with a commendable time of 5 hours, 21 minutes, and 48 seconds, claiming the fifth spot in the challenging 87km Comrades Marathon held in Durban last year.
As the highest-placed finisher in Limpopo, he rightfully earned a spot in the top ten.
However, enduring six months without a stipend, coupled with the responsibility of supporting his family and relying on running as his main source of income due to unemployment, brought stress and headaches.
Fortunately, signing a one-year contract has temporarily alleviated his financial concerns as he gears up for this year’s Comrades Marathon Up Run 87km, scheduled from Durban to Pietermaritzburg on 9 June.
“After enduring six months without receiving a stipend from my former club, Murray & Roberts, I am now filled with 100% happiness and eager anticipation for my upcoming endeavours on the road. The prospect of acquiring new running gear and support feels like an early birthday gift especially considering I will be celebrating my 44th birthday in just seven weeks. My journey searching for a new athletics home was featured in SABC Sport, drawing the attention of Black Diamond, whose timely intervention came to my rescue. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the national broadcaster for spotlighting my story and plea for assistance. Feeling rejuvenated, akin to a teenager, my ambitious goal for this year’s Comrades is to complete the run in 5 hours and 40 minutes, a target I am determined to achieve, “expressed a grateful Photo in an interview with SABC Sport.
“I’ll be dedicated to my new club throughout the entire season. Additionally, I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve secured a new sponsor, Ebhele Nabangani Consulting Engineers, for 2024. I appreciate their belief in me and willingness to take on a veteran runner. With this valuable support, I eagerly anticipate participating in various competitions with unwavering determination,” shared Photo.
