This year's consideration period has been extended to include the recently held Olympics and the ongoing Paralympics.
The awards are highly anticipated after an exciting and successful sporting season, with many athletes, federations, and clubs working hard and achieving significant success.
Gauteng, the home of champions, has produced many successful athletes, and this includes a number of them who excelled at the recently held Olympics and the Under-20 World Athletics.
The Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation, Mr Matome Chiloane, announced 20 unchanged award categories from the previous year during the unveiling of the awards on SABC 1’s Sport@10 on Wednesday 04 September.
These categories include Sportsperson of the Year (both able-bodied and with a disability), Young Athlete/Player of the Year, Sports Photographer, Sports Journalist, and the coveted Sports Personality of the Year, which carries the biggest prize of a brand new vehicle. Importantly, the Sports Personality of the Year is decided by public votes, allowing voters to win prize money.
MEC Chiloane highlighted that the Awards “aim to recognize and honour athletes for their hard work, and to acknowledge the significant achievements of Gauteng athletes and teams on the national and international stages.”
According to him (MEC Chiloane), “Sport has, over the 30 years of our freedom and democracy, played a major role in uniting people and promoting a socially cohesive nation.”
Mr Vivian Lottering, the President of the Gauteng Sports Confederation (GSC), joined MEC Chiloane in the studio to outline this year’s 13th edition of the awards. GSC serves as the organizing and implementing agency for the Awards on behalf of the department.
Mr Lottering expressed pride in Gauteng's leading role in developing sports in the country, attributing the success to the region's contribution of athletes and sports stars across various disciplines.
