Samuel Sepeng on why Prudence Sekgodiso will not double at World Champs

Prudence Sekgodiso’s coach Samuel Sepeng has explained to SABC Sport why the middle-distance runner will focus solely on the 800m event at major international competitions in 2025.

The 23-year-old has already secured her spot for the World Senior Championships in Tokyo, Japan, set for September.

However, Sekgodiso will not attempt the 1500m-800m double at the world championships.

Sepeng says she will prioritize the 800m on the global stage, where the stakes are higher.

"That one to be honest with you, she's still young, I'm considering doubling at the moment. We are still focusing on the 800m so she can improve the time. You know getting into the final and looking at the final, the last 150m, she was still on the medal, that's 150m to go, we only started losing on the last 100m,” Sepeng said.

“So, for me, we're still gonna push on the 800m but as you know Prudence, she's more from the 1500. So, we wanna balance both events, getting a good time into the 1500m. For now, we're gonna focus on one event."

The award-winning coach believes that he might give Sekgodiso the opportunity to attempt the double at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, during her second appearance.

"Maybe something might happen in 2028, we never know if things go well, the times getting together then we can say now we double or we're gonna move to 1500m but at the moment we're still gonna keep 800m. The only doubling will be at the nationals."
