Victor Ikpeba criticises Chelsea's decision to sack Graham Potter

Former Super Eagles forward Victor Ikpeba believes the Chelsea hierarchy were wrong to sack coach Graham Potter after Aston Villa loss.

The Blues are currently 11th in the Premier League standings after their recent setback.

During Monday Night Football broadcast on SuperSport TV, the 49-year-old Ikpeba questioned the timing of Potter's sacking, saying, "It's unfortunate. In football, it's about results. When you look at the time lines, the statistics from when he took over, you cannot argue that the players aren't doing enough."

Ikpeba also expressed his thoughts on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, a former Gabon international and a one-time winner of the African Footballer of The Year award, like himself. "The truth of the matter is that I don't know why he doesn't have faith in Aubameyang. You can't win games without strikers. There are no strikers in this Chelsea side."

He added that Chelsea's recruitment department should take responsibility for what is happening at the club. "They just bought these players from everywhere," he said.

According to Ikpeba, sacking a manager just nine or ten games before the end of the season won't solve the club's problems. He believes that the club should have kept faith with Potter until the end of the season and then parted ways.

"The new Chelsea manager might come in and start getting the results. So it's unfortunate for Potter," the one-time Borussia Dortmund and AS Monaco forward stressed.

Chelsea are set to host Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night in the Premier League before facing Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League next week.
