Leeto crossed the Finish Line first in an impressive 29 minutes and 34 seconds, however, his joy was short-lived as he was disqualified for failing to wear a permanent race number.
As a result, he lost the R20 000 prize money and the prestigious title of South African champion.
Bernard Seloyi, also representing CGA, was promoted to the champion’s status after finishing second with a time of 29:43.
Kabelo Mulaudzi followed closely in third place with a time of 29:50, which was elevated to second place after the disqualification.
Additionally, Kwa-Zulu Natal runner, Sibusiso Khubeka, originally fourth, was elevated to third place with a time of 29:56.
Seloyi’s earnings soared from a pocketful of R15 000 for his initial second-place finish to a hefty R20 000, coupled with clinching the national title in a swift turn of events.
Mulaudzi, securing R10 000 for his runner-up position, now had an increased purse of R15 000. Similarly, Khubeka’s winning saw a notable rise from R6000 to an impressive R10 000.
Speaking to SABC Sport, Mulaudzi expressed his disappointment with his performance describing it as a “bad race”. Despite this, he was pleasantly surprised to find himself moving up one place to second.
He admitted feeling both shocked and pleased by the outcome. Reflecting on the race, he acknowledged its challenges but remained optimistic, stating, “It is still early in the year, and I will improve with each subsequent race,”
Seloyi could not comment as his phone remained unanswered; he had already departed from the venue before the decision was finalized.
