Mahlangu played a key role in the SA 4x400m relay team’s silver medal performance in Lima, Peru, on Sunday.
Upon returning to Johannesburg, the team was greeted with a hero’s welcome at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday.
Mahlangu is grateful he decided to continue in the sport.
“I was selected for the 4x400m relay team and ended up winning a silver medal. I believe we are establishing a new culture in the relay events and starting to make a significant impact. Previously, I struggled with a high jump injury and had won one bronze medal in the triple jump, along with two silver medals before transitioning to sprinting in 2022,” Mahlangu said.
“In 2023, I triumphed in the 400m at the African junior championships, and the rest is history, now, as a sprinter, I’m thoroughly enjoying my sport.”
“We didn’t realize how fast I was until 2023 when my life took a turn for the better. I’ve learned that self-belief is crucial; without it, failure is inevitable. At the World Championships in Lima, everyone was in the game, but we aimed for gold and showed that we could compete with the USA.
“Though we didn't win, we’re proud of our performance and gave it our all. The results speak for themselves,” said the athlete, who is coached by renowned South African sprint coach Paul Gorries.
Mahlangu struggled with a knee injury, which led him to seek treatment from a specialist and ultimately decide to leave track. "I even considered switching to pole vaulting," he said.
"But sprinting has its own appeal, and here I am today. High jump was enjoyable until I got injured. My personal best was two meters, a national record at that time when I was in grade 10. Now, I’m happy focusing on sprinting and setting new goals in that discipline."
