Judy Rathethe believes her experience has been key in leading Ekurhuleni A to glory

Ekurhuleni A coach Judy Rathethe says being young and experienced has been key in leading her team to glory.

The Gauteng side retained their Males National Championships title in a hard fought 58-54 victory over Johannesburg A at Ellis Park Arena on Monday.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Rathethe says it took different game plans for different teams to see them clinch the coveted trophy.

“I think it helped a lot that I am a young coach with experience and that is why we find ourselves where we are. I think what we did well in our quest to retain the title, was to come up with different game plans for different teams. That made us unpredictable throughout the tournament,’’ said Rathethe.

Ekurhuleni enjoyed a decent run in the 2024 campaign with six wins in eight matches. Rathethe acknowledged that Capricorns have always been a tough opponent to face, having lost 53-50 against them - stating a reminder that past success offers no guarantee to win titles.

“I think the one team we have found hard to defeat has always been Capricorns. Their shooting is very accurate, and that helped in  securing a win against us. We however don’t take anything away from Johannesburg A, they came in full force against us in the final. But what helped us is the fact that they didn’t do their homework when it comes to our younger players,’’ added Rathethe.

The 32-year-old added to emphasise on the key role experienced coaches play in developing male netball.

“Netball needs coaches with experience to come and assist male players and give them guidance, that will help us grow the sport’’ she expressed.

With Ekurhuleni leading the way, the future of male netball in South Africa appears bright. The increasing competition and dedication of players and coaches promise an exciting journey ahead for this dynamic sport.
