SABC Sport urges boxing promoters to improve content and packaging

Head of SABC Sport, Keletso Totlhanyo, has urged boxing promoters in the country to improve their products and make them more attractive to new markets.

For the past two days, Totlhanyo has been attending the Boxing South Africa (BSA) Convention in East London, organised by the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture.

SABC Sport is the home of boxing broadcast in the country for more than four decades, both at amateur and professional levels, but Totlhanyo highlighted the biggest challenges boxing promoters have in recent times.

"If your content is good quality, you'll have the numbers. The general manager of the PSL [Premier Soccer League] shared the numbers, just of one game, that they were able to sell R100 ticket to 90 000 people – so you do the maths," said Totlhanyo.

"And that was not the only income that came in, the suites were also sold – so if your content is good quality for the fans, for the audiences at home, and the sponsors, then it become easier for you to sell it.

"So we are actually encouraging promoters that they need to take themselves seriously, and put good quality content that viewers would want to watch or listen to on the radio.

"It is very, very important that your lighting – I liked a presentation where they highlighted how we would like a tournament to be, which is really important for you to give us a professional and entertaining [package].

"Our mandate is to inform, educate and entertain, so if you're going to have content that people just want to switch off, it's a problem.

"So it's really important for both us as SABC, the promoters and Boxing SA to make sure whatever we put on air is good quality, compelling content that people want to watch."
