Currie Cup: Travelling Lions edge Griquas in high-scoring affair

The Lions came up trumps on their trip to Griquas, earning a well-deserved 28-36 in Kimberley on Sunday afternoon.

Lions flanker Renzo du Plessis opened the scoring in the seventh minute after running a great attacking line. However, the hosts replied almost immediately with two scores of their own. First, some fantastic hands saw Zane Bester finish off a team try, then the Griquas went coast-to-coast with a full-field effort finished off by fullback Cameron Hufke.

The try-fest continued as the Lions scored from a lineout maul, making the score 14-12. The missed conversion mattered little, as the Lions regained the lead with two quick tries from Morgan Naude and du Plessis, who picked up his second. That's how it remained until the break, with the Lions leading 14-24.

The match calmed down in the second stanza as both defences held firm. The visitors would score first thanks to another incredible 100m effort capped off by flanker Jarod Cairns.

The entertainment continued as Griquas countered from deep, resulting in Hufke going over for his second try. Griquas struck again through Tertius Kruger and the conversion from Lybabalo Dobela made it a one-point game.

However, Lions livewire Nico Steyn had other ideas as he sniped from the ruck to score from close range. Replacement Zander du Plessis added the extras to take the lead out to eight points, where the score remained until the final whistle.
