France held to surprise draw in rugby sevens opener against United States

France's Olympic rugby sevens campaign got off to a shuddery start after they were held to a 12-12 draw by the United States in their opening match.

Toulouse and France scrum-half Antoine Dupont was one of the stars on show after making the switch to sevens for the Games and, roared on by a home crowd at the Stade de France, Les Bleus went ahead when Jordan Sepho crossed.

However, the USA took a 7-5 lead at half-time when Lucas Lacamp's try was converted and although Rayan Rebbadj's converted effort saw France go back in front, Marcus Tupuola levelled for the USA to snatch a point against the World Rugby Sevens Series champions.

France then went on to earn their first victory of the competition later in the evening with an entertaining 19-12 victory over Uruguay.

Once again they went ahead, this time through Antoine Zeghdar, but Ignacio Facciolo scored a try just before half-time with the conversion successful.

Dupont led the charge for Les Bleus with a stunning solo effort down the centre of the pitch before shrugging off his defender to ground by the posts, but Uruguay instantly responded through Juan Gonzalez to level at 12-12.

Jefferson-Lee Joseph then sealed victory after cutting through the middle to ground with Jean Pascal Barraque adding the extras.
