URC: Lions put 60 points past Zebre in nine-try rout

The Lions were in a ruthless mood against Zebre in Johannesburg on Saturday, putting nine tries past the Italians in a 61-19 bonus-point thrashing.

Henco van Wyk and Edwill van der Merwe both scored a brace of tries while Sanele Nohamba kicked 14 points in the high-scoring United Rugby Championship clash.

Quan Horn, Francke Horn, Richard Kriel, Morne van den Berg and Emmanuel Tshituka were the other try-scorers for the Lions on the day.

The match was all but over as a contest within the first half hour as the hosts ran in four unanswered tries to race to a 26-0 lead.

Simone Gesi did return the favour for Zebre shortly after, but the Lions had the final say before half-time when Van Wyk scored the first of his two tries as it finished 33-7 to the home side at the break.

Zebre proved somewhat more competitive in the second half, adding two more tries via Gesi and Jacopo Trulla, but the Lions also picked up four more five-pointers for their troubles to seal an emphatic bounce-back victory after last week's disappointment against Ulster.
