Despite a strong start from the Welkom-based Griffons, who scored the opening try in just the first minute, Western Province secured their third win of the season after losing their last two games in the competition.
With the Griffons eyeing another upset, following their dramatic 32-28 victory over the Bulls, Western Province had welcomed back some of their firepower for the match.
However, both sides showed some scrappy play in the first quarter, and it was the 34-time Currie Cup champions who made the most handling errors and missed tackles.
But, the men from Cape Town eventually found their stride, scoring several tries, including one after the Griffons' Domenic Smit received a yellow card for cynical play.
Although the Griffons managed to regain the lead briefly, Western Province secured their points advantage going into the half-time break.
Both sides scored tries in the second half, but DHL Western Province ultimately dominated, scoring two more tries to the Griffons' one and securing the win.
Western Province will face the Cheetahs in Cape Town next Saturday, while the Griffons will take on the Pumas on Sunday.
