Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers wrap: Zambia secure top spot as Gabon crash out

A number of teams sealed their Africa Cup of Nations qualification with a mixed bag of performances on Saturday night.

Ivory Coast defeated Lesotho 1-0 in their final Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Stade Laurent Pokou on Saturday.

It was a strong performance from the host nation, who ended as runners-up in Group H.

Ibrahim Sangare scored the only goal of the game in the 16th minute although Simon Adingra came close to a second only for his header to be cleared off the line.

Lesotho ended their qualifying campaign bottom of Group H with just one point from their six games.

Zambia, meanwhile, ended top of Group H with their 1-1 draw with Comoros on Saturday.

Bendjaloud Youssouf opened the scoring just before half-time for the island nation but Patson Daka was on target with 71 minutes played to secure his side's place at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Elsewhere, Mozambique secured their place in the tournament proper with a thrilling 3-2 defeat of Benin, to end second in Group L.

Clesio Bauque netted a stoppage-time winner after goals from Witi (27') and Guima (31').

Steve Mounie had opened the scoring at the Estadio do Zimpeto from the penalty spot on 20 minutes while Jodel Dossou scored five minutes after the restart.

Senegal ended top of Group L after being held to a 1-1 draw with Rwanda, where Olivier Niyonzima cancelled out Mamadou Camara's 66th minute goal, deep into injury time.

Rwanda ended their qualifiers in last place while Benin placed third.

Mauritania ensured their place at AFCON with a 2-1 defeat of Gabon to ended in second place in Group I behind group winners DR Congo, with Gabon in third and Sudan ending in last place.

Hemeya Tanjy (30') and Aboubakar Kamara (42') both scored after Gabon were reduced to ten men early on as Jean-Noel Amonome was dismissed with just five minutes on the clock.

Mauritania ultimately conceded in the dying seconds as Obrahim Ndong netted in stoppage time.

Sudan ran out 2-0 loses to DR Congo, with Theo Bongonda on target on just eight minutes before Fiston Mayele secured the result with his goal with three minutes of the match remaining.

And Guinea qualified with their 2-2 draw with Malawi to end in second place in Group D behind Egypt.

Robert Saizi opened the scoring on 23 minutes ahead of goals from Aguibou Camara (56') and Saidou Sow (58') to hand Guinea the lead, only for Lawrence Chaziya to net an 88th minute equaliser.

But the draw wasn't enough for Malawi, who ended in third place, ahead of bottom-side Ethiopia.
