Amajimbos target upset against hosts in bid for AFCON U17 semi-finals

South Africa U17 men’s team coach Vela Khumalo says they are well capable of upsetting hosts and tournament favourites Morocco in tonight’s AFCON U17 quarter-final.

With qualification for the FIFA U17 World Cup now in the bag, the two teams clash for a place in the last four of the tournament in Mohammedia, Morocco this evening (21:00).

The home nation are Group A winners and still unbeaten in three matches, but Khumalo is confident they have thoroughly prepared for all aspects of this tie.

"We had our regen just after the game [against Burkina Faso] and then yesterday we had our functional training, wherein we worked on our deficiencies, looking at the things we did wrong but also the things we did right and how we can improve going forward," said Khumalo.

"We are well aware of what is at stake, we are well aware of who we are playing against – a team that has not conceded [in the tournament] and they are scoring goals.

"And we did our homework, we studied them and how they play, and we think importantly they play more like us – structured and it's a team that will come at us.

"So it will be a very interesting game and we are hoping to upset the country – that's really our intention, and it is not going to be easy but at the end of the game, we will have Moroccans supporting us going into the semi-finals."

Amajimbos goalkeeper Lwandiso Radebe has been the stand-out player in the past two matches, keeping opponents at bay even when in their most dangerous phase of attack, and says the pressure is something he’s relishing.

"Of course there's a lot of pressure, but I believe in the team and we know how to deal with it. We're very excited to be playing Morocco, knowing it will be a full stadium," he added.

"So, with that, we know that we can turn the Moroccan fans into our fans for the semi-finals, as the coach has said – we're planning on upsetting the home nation."
