Andre Onana left out of Man Utd squad to face Newcastle

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has been omitted from the squad for Sunday's Premier League fixture against Newcastle United, marking the first time the Cameroonian international has missed a league match since joining the club in 2023.

The decision follows a difficult outing for Onana in midweek, during which he committed two costly errors in United's 2â-2 draw with Lyon in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final. His absence from the matchday squad for the trip to Tyneside suggests a period of rest or reassessment, both physically and mentally.

Onana has featured in every Premier League minute for the Red Devils this season until now. His place is expected to be taken by Altay Bayındır, who has made only six appearances across all competitions this campaign.

In addition to his recent on-pitch struggles, it is understood that Onana has been dealing with personal challenges. In March, his wife was reportedly the victim of a robbery outside a restaurant in Manchester - a distressing incident that may have contributed to his current situation.

Sources suggest that Onana may be in contention to return for the second leg against Lyon at Old Trafford on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United will also be without their manager, Eddie Howe, for Sunday's fixture. The club confirmed that Howe had been admitted to hospital after feeling unwell for several days.

"Medical staff kept Eddie in hospital overnight for further tests, which are ongoing," Newcastle said in a statement. "He is conscious, speaking with his family, and continues to receive expert medical care."

In Howe's absence, coaching duties will be shared between assistants Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones as Newcastle prepare to host a United side facing increasing pressure both on and off the pitch.
