Andre Onana: Man Utd fan jeers won't rush my decisions on the ball

Andre Onana has made it clear that he won't be swayed by the pressure from Manchester United supporters who have criticized his tendency to hold onto the ball longer than they would like.

The Cameroon goalkeeper has faced frustration from some fans, especially when they feel he delays quick counter-attacking opportunities by not releasing the ball swiftly. The discontent was audible during Sunday's goalless draw with Manchester City at Old Trafford, where Onana's ball distribution seemed to exacerbate the crowd's tension.

However, the United shot-stopper remains unfazed. He insists his decisions on the field are made with one goal in mind: helping the team. "To be honest, the crowd's reaction doesn't affect me because I'm focused on making the right decisions for the team," Onana explained. "Sometimes I will get it right, and sometimes not, but I have to weigh each moment. If I feel we need to slow things down to give the team a breather, I'll do it. When it's time to speed up, I'll act quickly."

Onana also highlighted the tactical necessity behind his choices, especially when facing teams that control possession. "In the second half, when the opponent has more of the ball, my job is to help the players rest and recover. They need me to do that. But when we need to pick up the pace, I will make sure to do it."

Looking ahead, Onana and his United teammates will focus on their upcoming Europa League quarter-final against Lyon, with the first leg set for Thursday. After a solid point in the derby, United's eyes are firmly set on winning the competition to secure a spot in next season's Champions League.

On Lyon's challenge, Onana stated: "They're a good team, but it's not about themâ”it's about us. We know what we're capable of, and I believe we're the better side. If we go in with the right mindset, stay focused, and execute our game plan, we'll come out on top. It won't be easy, but I'm confident in our abilities."

With a belief in their quality and determination, Onana is ready to lead United into the crucial match with the conviction that victory is well within reach.
