Asanele Velebayi's parents approach Spurs over Kaizer Chiefs bid

SABC Sport has established that winger Asanele Velebayi’s parents have requested a meeting with Cape Town Spurs in an effort to force the player’s move to Kaizer Chiefs before the window closes.

The public broadcaster broke the news last month that the Soweto giants had opened talks with their Mother City counterparts as they looked to recruit the 21-year-old to strengthen coach Nasreddine Nabi’s squad.

With an initial bid sent by Chiefs this week and surprisingly turned down by Spurs, the player’s family have stepped in and are hopeful Spurs can allow Valebayi to make his dream move to The Glamour Boys.

It’s further understood that Velebayi has taken this route out of frustration after Chiefs followed up their interest by formally sending through a bid they believed would match Spurs’ valuation of a player that only made his topflight debut last season.

Spurs were relegated back to the Motsepe Foundation Championship, and indications are that Valebayi – and more so his mother – is unhappy with having to drop down to the lower division ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The progress made by the winger was evident when he was called up to the Bafana Bafana squad in July for the COSAFA Cup by coach Helman Mkhalele.

Chiefs and Spurs have already managed to conclude a deal between the two parties following the agreement to transfer defender Rushwin Dortley, who was also part of that national team squad in Gqeberha.

It’s understood Dortley’s parents also had to get involved to force the move after Spurs were haggling with Amakhosi over the fee.

SABC Sport is led to believe Chiefs will not give up and perhaps the family’s involvement will now tip the discussions in their favour.

Velebayi has made it clear to The Urban Warriors he wants to leave and it’s expected that mother will emphasise this stance.

Spurs produce some of the best players from their youth academy and pride themselves in allowing them to flourish, and this is what the Valebayi family is banking on.

The Premier Soccer League transfer window is set to shut down on 20 September.
