CAF insist Africa Super League original plan stands

CAF General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba has refuted media reports that next year’s planned African Super League could be downscaled, maintaining that the original plan stands.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Mosengo-Omba said reports that the tournament could move from the envisaged 24 teams to eight are unfounded, and they are still on course to launch in August 2023.

The inaugural tournament will see each participant receiving a preparation fee of around R34-million, with winners taking home close to R190 million in prize money.

"I don't know where the information comes from, but what I know [is] we're still working on it. The format we presented is still the same," said Mosengo-Omba.

"Three regions for the Super League, three regions for the Confederation Cup, which will have promotion and relegation, and that is still there.

"We have to work still next year to finalise it for once. [Details] will depend on the president [Patrice Motsepe] and the executive. I cannot say [when it will be released], I don't have the calendar for this."
