The Mother City outfit are yet to win a match in 2024 and have slipped down to sixth place on the DStv Premiership table as a result.
With five games to go, Tinkler still wants City to control their own fate.
''It is getting tight there, I think we have to, what you don't want is having to rely on others. Yes we still rely on ourselves, but that can change if we don't get back to winning ways,'' said Tinkler.
City next face Orlando Pirates in Cape Town tomorrow, and Tinkler hopes that can be the fixture to turn around their fortunes.
But the in-form Buccaneers won’t be easy to beat.
''It is not going to be easy, it's only Richards Bay and Swallows. Although Swallows are catching up as well, so the result against Pirates is going to be extremely fundamental at home, not easy. But we got to take it game by game,'' added Tinkler.
Tinkler added that he was still working to find solutions following the 1-1 draw against Golden Arrows at the weekend.
One of City’s strengths – and at times stumbling blocks – this season has been the introduction of an influx of youngsters from the academy.
Tinkler accepts that they can blow hot and cold.
