Fabian Schar: Newcastle not satisfied with performance against Leicester

Fabian Schar has admitted Newcastle United's performance in Monday night's 3–0 victory over Leicester was not up to standard, despite the convincing scoreline.

The Swiss defender, who recently signed a new contract at St James' Park, emphasised the importance of raising standards as the Magpies chase European football.

Schar, who delivered a standout performance in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley earlier this season, remains a vital presence at the heart of Newcastle's defence alongside local lad Dan Burn.

The veteran centre-back is hungry for more silverware and believes the club is on the right path.

With Sunday afternoon's clash against Manchester United looming at St James' Park, the stakes are rising.

A victory could propel Newcastle closer to a coveted Champions League spot, adding further weight to an already high-profile fixture.

"There is work to do. The scoreline was pretty good at Leicester yes but I think we weren't actually very happy. We gave the ball away too cheaply and quickly. We wanted to set our standards high in the second half," said Schar.

"Overall it was a great win but we know we can play much better football - and we will have to. Obviously we scored quick first goal and then the second one. In these games you have to be ruthless and we were in the first half. In terms of scoring goals we're doing well.

"We need a lot of points to achieve our aim for the season and there is not one thought about next season. It's about Man United.

"Like every other game in the Premier League it will be tough, we know we play at home and want to have a good result again. Today we can enjoy our win over Leicester and tomorrow focus on the next game."
