“I believe that for Africa, there are different challenges. Firstly, it's about showcasing their talents and making people understand how they are catching up. Secondly, it's a way to show the progress of talents. The better they fare, the more Western teams will be willing to scout in Africa,” Rendambo said.
Africa currently has the most expensive players in women’s football with Zambia duo, Rachel Kundananji and Barbra Banda the first and second most high-priced female players in the world, respectively. While Zambia’s debut in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup saw them exiting in the group stages, South Africa, Nigeria and Morocco made it to the last 16. Rendambo believes the growth in women’s football in Africa is evident.
“Women's football in Africa is definitely gaining traction! The world's most expensive transfer is Zambian and Africa is the last frontier market. I believe that Zambia's performance will be scrutinized for example,” he added.
The French women’s national team exited the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in the quarterfinals against co-hosts, Australia. Rendambo, who is Gabonese, based in Paris and runs a global sports agency, Ozamba Sports, representing men and women athletes, insists they will have pressure to get a podium finish at the Games since they are the hosts.
“I do think that they will be facing a lot of pressure to get a silverware since this is at home. Yet, I don't see them winning. They still lack something to be able to win a major trophy.”
