Javier Fernandez faces fresh injury blow at Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich's promising youngster Javier Fernandez has hit another hurdle in his fledgling career.

The 19-year-old Spaniard, who joined the Bavarians from Atletico Madrid in 2023, has been a standout for their youth sides. His rapid rise saw him earn regular first-team training sessions under head coach Vincent Kompany and a full pre-season with the senior squad after shaking off a nagging groin injury.

But just when it seemed he was on the cusp of a breakthrough, fate dealt a cruel hand.

Fresh off pre-season, Fernandez twisted his ankle, sidelining him for Bayern's entire first half of the campaign. He battled back to lead the Under-19s as captain in a UEFA Youth League clash against Real Betis' youngsters on February 18, 2025.

Disaster struck early, though. Fernandez crumpled to the pitch with a knee issue but gutsed it out until the 70th minute of the 1-0 win.

Bayern's official website later confirmed the damage: "Midfielder Javier Fernandez sustained an injury to his right knee in the Youth League victory over Betis Sevilla (1-0) and has already undergone successful surgery. He will be absent from the amateurs and the U19s for several weeks."

"Several weeks" sounds optimistic, but Bayern fans have heard this before. Defender Josip Stanisic got the same prognosis last year, only to miss over four months.

Fernandez's latest setback couldn't come at a worse time - his contract expires in June 2025, and the club face a big call. "He's got all the tools - vision, technique, leadership," Kompany has said of the midfielder in the past. Yet, his injury list is growing longer than his highlight reel.

On X, Bayern posted a get-well-soon message on February 20, 2025: "Speedy recovery, Javi! We're with you all the way." Fernandez replied, "Thanks for the support - back stronger soon."

But with his deal ticking down, the Bavarians must weigh his undeniable talent against his brittle frame. Do they stick by their Spanish starlet, or let him chase a fresh start elsewhere this summer?

For now, the focus is on rehab - again.
