Chiefs mental coach helped Ranga Chivaviro improve his form – Khalil Ben Youssef

Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef has credited the club’s psychologist Dr. Henning Gericke for the improved mental state of their striker Ranga Chivaviro.

Ben Youssef, was responding after Amakhosi cruised to the last 16 stage of the Nedbank Cup, beating lower division side Free Agents FC 4-0.

Chivaviro, who has been struggling to score goals and on the receiving end of the supporters, scored the fourth goal in this game.

Ben Youssef says the mental coach is doing some good work.

"For sure this goal will help him, last time Ranga was unlucky, he missed a lot of goals and you know strikers when they don't score. Like I said last time, we work a lot with him even our mental coach, he works with him a lot,” Ben Youssef said.

“I think now with his goal he can help him a lot and we need him, the season is long. So, we need all the players, I think with this goal Ranga will come back."

Gericke, a former member of Springboks technical team, joined Chiefs in 2023 during Molefi Ntseki’s time when the club was going through some challenges.

Ben Youssef says the mental coach makes their job simpler as the technical team.

"For sure, we are at the high level now before the head coach he does everything. He's a head coach, he's a fitness coach, he's an assistant coach, now step by step even at the high level there is specialty,” he added.

“So, we have a head coach, we have an assistant coach, we have a fitness coach and also we have a mental coach. He helps us a lot if someone has a problem in the pitch or a problem outside the pitch with family or something, he can arrange with him.

“We have meetings every day, sometimes we advise him about some players to organise meetings with them. Sometimes he makes reports for us about some players and also the profile of the players in terms of communication, some players you have to shout at them, some players you have to speak with them like young players.

“Some players you have to make individual meetings in order to correct them so for that it's very important to make different profiles for the players, then it makes it easy for us to communicate with them."
