Kaizer Chiefs should not be fighting for Top 8 - Edmilson Dove

Kaizer Chiefs defender Edmilson Dove says it’s frustrating that the club has gone from a title-chasing team to struggling for silverware and languishing in mid-table.

As Chiefs prepare to face TS Galaxy in their 24th game of the Betway Premiership this evening (19:00), failure to win could see Amakhosi drop out of the top eight.

With only six games to go in this campaign, Dove says they are seriously concerned.

"This is not a team to be fighting for top eight or top four, it deserves to be on the top – and I don't want to dwell a lot on what happened last season because it's disappointing even for us as players not being able to find ourselves in one of the cups," said Dove.

"But such is life, we can only control whatever we can and the gents are working extremely hard in training, and the frustration comes from the amount of work that we put in our there [on the field] but come game days, we're not able to walk away with results.

"Sometimes you have a feeling that it could probably have been better – sometimes we do everything we can and it's just one of those moments that we need to continue being focussed, never give up, be united and continue pressing forward."

Having conceded 28 goals in the league this season, Chiefs have the third-worst defensive record, but Dove says it’s not only back-liners responsible for this.

"I mean, defending doesn't start at the back – it's a whole unity problem, and there are things that we need to fix, starting from the front to the back," he added.

"Because when we concede goals, it's not only the defenders who concede but the whole team, so I think it's something that we need to fix as a unit and not only a department."
